Study notes
Unit 6 shows how industrialization fueled a new wave of imperialism. Ideas like Social Darwinism, nationalism, and the 'civilizing mission' were used to justify empire, and new technology (steamships, the telegraph, the Maxim gun, quinine) made conquest possible, as in the Scramble for Africa. Know the methods of imperial expansion, from settler colonies to economic imperialism like Britain's role in China (the Opium Wars) and Latin America. Study Indigenous resistance (the Sepoy Rebellion, Ghost Dance, Zulu wars), how colonies were turned into suppliers of raw materials and cash crops, and the causes and effects of migration, including indentured servitude and anti-immigrant policies.
