Study notes

Unit 7 covers a half century of upheaval. Long-standing empires (Qing, Ottoman, Russian, Austro-Hungarian) collapsed through revolution and war. World War I grew out of militarism, alliances, imperialism, and nationalism, and it became a total war that mobilized entire societies, including colonial troops. The Great Depression led governments to intervene in their economies (the New Deal) and helped authoritarian and fascist regimes rise in Germany, Italy, and Japan. Study the causes and conduct of World War II, the total war mobilization of both sides, and the mass atrocities of the 20th century, including the Holocaust, the Armenian genocide, and the Cambodian genocide.
